What to Expect
- Golu (Kolu) displays: tiered arrangements of dolls and figurines in homes
- Golu hopping: visiting friends and neighbours to see their displays
- Sundal (spiced lentil snacks) served to visitors at every golu
- Special pujas on each of the nine nights
- Saraswati Puja on the ninth night (books and instruments placed before the goddess)
- Vijayadashami: children start learning new arts (vidyarambham)
Tips for Visitors
- Mylapore is the best area for golu hopping, as many houses are open to visitors
- Bring a small offering (fruits or sundal) when visiting someone's golu
- The Kapaleeshwarar Temple's Navaratri celebrations are particularly grand
- Kalikambal Temple in George Town hosts elaborate Navaratri events
