Chennai Weather & Climate

Chennai sits on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal and has a tropical wet-and-dry climate. The city is warm year-round, with distinct hot, monsoon, and cooler seasons that shape how residents and visitors plan their days.

Summer (March to June)

Chennai's summer begins in March and peaks in April and May, when daytime temperatures regularly reach 38 to 42 degrees Celsius. Humidity sits between 60 and 70 per cent, making the heat feel heavier than in drier inland cities. Early mornings and evenings are the practical windows for outdoor activity. Air conditioning is a necessity indoors, and most locals adjust their routines around the midday heat. Sea breezes along the coast offer some relief, particularly in Besant Nagar and Marina Beach after sunset. June brings the onset of scattered pre-monsoon showers and a slight drop in peak temperatures.

Southwest Monsoon (June to September)

Unlike much of India, Chennai does not receive heavy rain from the southwest monsoon. This period brings occasional showers and overcast skies that reduce temperatures to around 34 to 37 degrees. Humidity remains high. It is a relatively unremarkable weather period for the city, and daily life continues without major disruption.

Northeast Monsoon (October to December)

This is Chennai's primary rainy season. The northeast monsoon brings the bulk of the city's annual rainfall, particularly in October and November. Individual spells can be intense, with heavy rain causing waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Velachery, Mudichur, and parts of Tambaram. Cyclonic activity in the Bay of Bengal can bring sustained downpours. Despite this, many residents consider October and November pleasant because temperatures drop to 26 to 32 degrees and the air feels fresher. December is generally drier and marks the start of the most comfortable weather.

Winter (January to February)

Chennai's version of winter is mild by national standards. Temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees with lower humidity, making this the most comfortable period for walking, sightseeing, and outdoor dining. Early mornings can feel cool by Chennai standards, with lows around 18 to 20 degrees. This is an excellent window for visiting heritage sites, parks, and beaches. The annual Pongal festival in January falls during this period.

Practical Tips

  • Carry water and sun protection year-round. Dehydration is a real risk from March to June.
  • If visiting in November, check weather forecasts daily. Heavy rain spells are short but can disrupt travel plans.
  • Cotton and linen clothing works best. Chennai is not a city for layered outfits.
  • The best months for tourism are December, January, and February.
