Government Museum, Chennai
The second oldest museum in India, housing a vast collection of archaeological and numismatic artifacts, bronze sculptures, and botanical specimens.
History
Established in 1851, the Government Museum in Egmore is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata. Originally called the Madras Museum, it was founded by the Madras Literary Society. The museum complex includes six buildings spread across the Pantheon campus, with the main building being an Indo-Saracenic structure designed by Henry Irwin.
Architecture
The museum's main building is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture with its arched facades, domed towers, and ornate detailing. The National Art Gallery building adjacent to it features Mughal and Rajput architectural elements.
Visiting Information
