Shri Parshwanath Swetambar Jain Temple
A historic Swetambar Jain temple in George Town, built by Jain merchants who traded in the bustling Mint Street area.
History
The Shri Parshwanath Swetambar Jain Temple on Mint Street is one of the oldest Jain temples in Chennai, established in the 19th century by Rajasthani and Gujarati Jain merchants who settled in George Town for trade. The Mint Street area was historically the commercial hub of Madras, and the Jain trading community played a significant role in the region's textile and gem trade. The temple has been maintained and renovated over generations by the Swetambar Jain community.
Architecture
The temple features a blend of North Indian and South Indian architectural styles. The entrance showcases intricately carved marble arches with motifs of lotus flowers and celestial beings. The inner sanctum houses an idol of Lord Parshwanath, the 23rd Tirthankara, in pristine white marble. The ceiling is adorned with painted panels depicting Jain cosmology and scenes from the lives of the Tirthankaras. A small courtyard with a tulsi garden provides a peaceful retreat from the noise of Mint Street.
