Kandaswamy Temple, Thirupporur
One of the oldest Murugan temples near Chennai, dating to the Pallava period, and an important stop on the Arupadai Veedu pilgrimage circuit.
History
The Kandaswamy Temple at Thirupporur is one of the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Murugan in the Chennai region, with origins in the Pallava period (10th century). "Thirupporur" itself means "sacred battlefield," referring to the site where Lord Murugan is believed to have battled and defeated demonic forces. The temple is considered a significant Murugan shrine and is sometimes included in extended pilgrimage circuits alongside the Arupadai Veedu temples. Inscriptions from the Chola and Vijayanagara periods attest to the temple's continuous significance over the centuries. The temple underwent major renovation in the 20th century, restoring its ancient splendour.
Architecture
The temple features a grand Dravidian gopuram with intricate carvings of scenes from the Skanda Purana. The inner sanctum houses Lord Murugan in his Shanmukha (six-faced) form, a rare iconographic representation. The temple complex spans a large area with a sacred tank, a Nandi mandapam, and shrines to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. Stone inscriptions from the Chola era are preserved on the temple walls.
