History

St. Mary's Church was consecrated on 28 October 1680, making it the oldest Anglican church east of the Suez Canal. Built by Streynsham Master, the Governor of Fort St. George, the church has witnessed key moments in colonial history. Robert Clive was married here in 1753, and Elihu Yale (the benefactor of Yale University) was among its early parishioners. The church register, dating to 1680, is one of the oldest parish documents in India.

Architecture

The church is a solid, fortress-like structure with thick walls (nearly 4 feet) designed to serve as a shelter during sieges. The interior features a vaulted ceiling, wooden pews, memorial plaques from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a carved wooden altarpiece. The floor is paved with old tombstones. The building's austere exterior belies the historical richness within.
