Poonamallee, derived from the Tamil name "Poonthamalli" meaning "jasmine garland", is one of the oldest settlements in the Chennai region. The town was an important military post during both the Vijayanagara Empire and British colonial periods, and the ruins of the Poonamallee Fort still stand as testament to its strategic significance. Situated on the Grand Western Trunk Road connecting Chennai to Bangalore, Poonamallee has grown into a busy suburban centre while retaining its historical character. The area is well connected by the Chennai–Tiruvallur suburban railway and major bus routes.
